Sebastian Priaulx and Scott Maxwell will head into the final two rounds of the 2019 British GT Championship leading the GT4 drivers’ standings after finishing the two-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in sixth place in the #15 Multimatic Mustang.
In the #19 Mustang, Seb’s father, Andy Priaulx, had a great time on his British GT debut, sharing the car with Sir Chris Hoy. They finished 14th in the GT4 category, which was sixth in the Pro Am category.
Scott Maxwell was behind the wheel of the #15 Mustang for the start of the race. He and Seb had qualified the car in third and knew that with the extra time penalty for winning last time out at Donington they would have their work cut out for them.
The start was almost a disaster when the green lights were delayed so everyone was hitting the brakes as the race went green! As the cars all powered into Turn 1 it was a small miracle that they all emerged unscathed.
“The start was interesting,” said Maxwell. “I was relieved to make it through Turn 1 in one piece and then after that it was a case of staying in the game and hoping we didn’t lose too many places in the pit stops, which is when we serve the time penalty. Being blocked in by a rival team at the stop didn’t help as we lost a further nine seconds! After that it was a fairly uneventful race, which is what you want when you are fighting for a championship. We now go to two tracks that suit the Mustang and we have no win penalty at Brands Hatch so let’s hope we can get back up there on the podium.”
It was Hoy at the wheel of the #19 Mustang for the start of the race and he had a strong run before handing over to Andy Priaulx, who was making his British GT debut.
“I had such a fun weekend,” said Priaulx. “The race was tough for us as it’s not really a Mustang track at present power levels. I felt very proud to race in the same team as my son. I had the upper hand in Qualifying but after trading times in the race he was the fastest. I’m thrilled to see that he is still leading the championship and I will go back to being a ‘Hockey Dad’, as Larry Holt calls me, for the final two rounds. Big thanks to Larry and the team for this weekend!”
The penultimate round of the 2019 British GT Championship takes place at Brands Hatch in two weeks’ time.
