Ford Mustang GT4 Overview

The Ford Mustang GT4 was designed and engineered by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports as a turnkey race car, ready to compete in sports car racing championships across the globe, including the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and the British GT Championship. More than just a car, the Ford Mustang is an iconic American brand, so the race car had a lot to live up to!

First revealed in late 2016, the Ford Mustang GT4 was based on the championship-winning Shelby GT350R-C and designed to continue that car’s winning legacy. It is one of the most potent and affordable GT4 cars available, which is what makes it a popular choice for privateer race teams.

The Mustang GT4 is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre V8 racing engine, developed by Ford Performance and Roush Yates engines.

Lightweight carbon fibre is used throughout the car from the front splitter to the rear wing, the design of which was derived from lessons learned by Multimatic during the Ford GT race programme. Considerable work went into developing the Mustang GT4 into a well-balanced race car. Weight reduction and a lower centre of gravity was achieved following a comprehensive aerodynamic development programme, as well as significant use of carbon composite technologies.

The car has competed predominantly in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (previously known as the IMSA SportsCar Challenge), entered by Multimatic Motorsports and its customers. It debuted at Daytona in 2017 where it was immediately on the pace, locking out the front row in qualifying and taking a top-five finish. At the second race, which was held at Sebring, the maiden victory came.

After earning Ford the manufacturer’s title in the 2018 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Multimatic Motorsports elected to take on one of the toughest GT4 challenges in Europe, entering two Mustang GT4s in the British GT Championship.

Throughout 2019, the two Multimatic-entered Mustang GT4s raced against top competition from Aston Martin, McLaren and Mercedes. The team kept the same line-up of Scott Maxwell and Sebastian Priaulx in one car throughout the season, while the second car featured new guest drivers at every round. One such guest was British Olympian, Sir Chris Hoy, who loved the Mustang.

“The car was really easy to drive,” said Hoy. “It’s the perfect car for an amateur GT racer as it’s quick, it’s stable and it encourages you to push.”

The Maxwell/Priaulx partnership finished as Championship runners-up after being pipped to the post at the final round but the Mustang GT4 races on in British GT in the hands of customer team, Academy Motorsport.

The iconic Ford Mustang GT4 also continues to compete in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and the GT World Challenge Europe.
