Mustang FR500C Squad Enjoys Mixed Fortunes at the Glen

WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 11th, 2005) – Ford Racing Technology and Multimatic Motorsports’ two factory entries enjoyed and endured wildly contrasting luck in the latest round of the Grand Am Cup Championship at Watkins Glen today.

While David Empringham and Scott Maxwell “stole” second place thanks to some clever race strategy, the #05 entry of Gunnar Jeannette and James Guy suffered the worst possible luck in the race – a flat tire and a separate spin into the gravel thanks to oil on the track put them back to 52nd place in the 69 car field.

Both cars faced a tough assignment with all Mustang FR500C entries now having to run with a taller differential gear ratio – a dramatic performance penalty enforced by Grand-Am officials.

“It was a very contrasting day for us – we had one car which achieved a result far better than we expected, but another whose day didn’t go to plan,” said Multimatic Vice President and Technical Director, Larry Holt.

“The new differential ratio Grand-Am has forced us to run really makes our work tough.

“We held on as good as we could with Scott and David but managed to dive into the pits for our last stop right on a yellow flag. That worked perfectly for us and surprisingly we were one of only two of the top teams who did.

“David was able to hold off the pack at the end because there were so many yellow flags. But we had nothing for the BMW at the finish – there was no way we could even get close.

“Gunnar and James day was very unlucky – their day just went from bad to worse after they had the flat tire.”

The two Multimatic Motorsports cars will now head to home soil at Mosport near Toronto next weekend for round six of the 2005 championship.

Ford Racing Technology embarked on this program to return the Mustang to the race track, and unveiled the new Mustang FR500C racer at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association Show in Las Vegas in November last year. Ford Racing worked closely with Multimatic on the design, development, and build of the race car to Grand-Am specification.

Ford Racing Performance Parts will offer the Mustang FR500C in Grand-Am Cup specification, as well as all the racing components necessary for race team support and for those enthusiasts interested in enhancing their own Mustangs.


Scott Maxwell

“We ended up with a good result, but I have to say we were extremely fortunate today. With the rear dif ratio it made life really tough out there. I couldn’t run with the quick guys at all. As has been the case all year, the Multimatic team’s strategy was perfect and that is the reason why we ended up second. The amount of yellows in the second half of the race is the only thing that kept us at the front. Any more green lap running at the end and David could have been in real trouble. The good part is the result keeps us in the championship chase.” 

David Empringham

“Today was a lucky day for us. I had to drive really defensively to hold off the pack at the end. We were lucky to dive into the pits at just the right time and that is what put us at the front. The car was nowhere near as good as it has been in the past couple of races. The Multimatic Motorsports team has done a great job but the new restrictions they have thrown at the Mustang have really hurt us. Hopefully we can hold on to the champinship lead, but it is going to be very difficult.”

Gunnar Jeannette

“We could have had a fantastic race, but it didn’t work out that way. I passed Bill Auberlen at one stage, but he ran into me getting back past and knocked the valve stem off the wheel – giving me a flat tire. The Multimatic guys did a fantastic job to get the tire changed and get me back on track but then somebody blew up in front of me and left oil all over the road. About five of us ran off the road into the gravel. By the time I got back out we were three laps down and our race was ruined. I am very disappointed, but today our luck really just wasn’t with us.”

James Gue

“We struggled with the set-up all weekend, but we managed to get a reasonable car for the race. My stint went ok, but things fell apart for Gunnar when the BMW ran into him. That flat tire really ruined our race and things went from bad to worse when he ran off on the oil. We are both pretty disappointed, but we now have to set our sights on bouncing back at Multimatic’s home track at Mosport next weekend.”
