Father and Son Bourdais Team Join Forces with Multimatic at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (January 26th, 2006) – Multimatic Motorsports proved itself to be a champion squad in 2005 Grand Am Cup competition by winning the driver’s and team’s titles as well as the manufacturer’s title for ford – now another champion is set to step aboard its Ford Mustang FR500C for an attack on the opening round of the 2006 championship at Daytona.

Two-time Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais has swapped his Ford-powered Newman-Haas Lola for a Ford-powered Mustang muscle car to team up with his father, Patrick, for the Grand-Am Cup 200.

The French father-and-son combination has proven to be right on the pace in their Grand Am Cup debut – the Bourdais boys were fastest in today’s second practice session.

This special Grand Am Cup team entry – a gift from Ford Racing for winning the Champ Car title – is not the first time either member of the Bourdais family has teamed up with Multimatic.

Sebastien’s McDonalds-sponsored Newman-Haas Lola receives technical support from Multimatic which provides its latest DSSV damping technology to the team as well as four-post-rig tuning and engineering services.

Patrick – an eight-time competitor at the 24 Hours of Le Mans – drove for Panoz Motor Sports last year in the French classic and was engineered by Multimatic’s J-F Chretien who is back with him this weekend at Daytona.

Multimatic also supplies DSSV dampers to the Panoz assault, developed the Panoz Esperante chassis and provides on-track engineering services.

For 2006, Multimatic Motorpsorts will run the entire Panoz Esperante GTLM factory race program in the ALMS from its Toronto headquarters.

For Sebastien, racing has been a case of “like father, like son.” “I guess the best way to describe it is that he was the one that really got me involved in racing,” Sebastien said.

“He was a racer himself. I pretty much grew up at the race track. That was the main reason I wanted to drive because when you’re a kid you see things that you want to try for yourself. That’s pretty much how everything started.”

Multimatic’s David Empringham won the 2005 Grand Am Cup Championship aboard the Mustang FR500C. All four Multimatic drivers including Empringham, Scott Maxwell, Gunnar Jeannette and James Gue won races in 2005.

Ford Racing Technology embarked in 2004 to return the Mustang to the race track. It unveiled the new Mustang FR500C racer at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association Show in Las Vegas in November of that year. Ford Racing worked closely with Multimatic on the design, development, and build of the racecar to Grand-Am specification.

In its first year of competition, the Mustang FR500C won four races on route to the 2005 Championship. In addition to the Multimatic entry this weekend, a further 11 privately entered Mustang FR500C racecars – all built by Multimatic – will compete.

“Sebastien has received many awards in recognition of his many championships over the years, but we wanted to offer him something truly unique that he’d be sure to remember,” said Dan Davis, director of Ford Racing Technology.

“Having the chance to spend time with your father doing something you both love is an experience I think we all can appreciate. I can assure you that they’ll have a very fast Mustang and a great team campaigning the car. All they have to do is go out and have fun – and I’m sure they will.”

Sebastien Bourdais is fresh off capturing back-to-back (2004-2005) championships in the Champ Car World Series. In 2005, Bourdais, driving the No. 1 McDonald’s Ford-Lola-Bridgestone, won six races and five poles, both series’ bests, and earned podium finishes in seven of 13 Champ Car races.

Along with his 24 Hours of Le Mans exploits, Patrick Bourdais also won the 1991 French Renault Clio Cup Championship.
