Tonis got his first taste of motorsports in the form of ice racing with his father in Estonia, and soon after he moved into go karts and won the Baltic States Kart Racing Championship twice. He also contested the Formula Opel Lotus Series, and was named Estonia’s Best Racer in 1995.
In 1998, Tonis moved to North America to pursue a career in open-wheel racing. He contested the SCCA Formula Continental series, winning the championship in 2000. Tonis continued to move up the ranks and contested the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2005, finishing second in the series and winning three races. The following year Tonis got his big break and competed in five races for Rocketsport Racing in the Champ Car World Series with a best finish of 11th in Edmonton. Tonis Kasemets joined the Multimatic Motorsports team to pilot the #71 Aston Martin Vantage V8 in the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season. Tonis showed great pace in the new Aston Martin, garnering a podium finish at Laguna Seca. Paired occasionally with Scott Maxwell in the #55 Vantage V8 when the team was running only one car, the duo set blistering lap times and combined to be one of the best driver pairings in the series. Tonis finished off the season with Jade Buford in the #71 Multimatic Aston.
Tonis and Multimatic continue their partnership in 2013 with the Aston Martin Vantage V8 Grand-Am program. This season Tonis will be paired with Michael Marsal in the #71 Multimatic Aston Martin.
